How to replace outlook, big pst file and access online?

I'd like to try and switch my pc off during the day, at the moment, I'm either at my pc or on my laptop or doing other things. I don't want to have to end switching my pc on and off all the time. Also I don't want to have to buy another copy of outlook. I also have BIG PST files.

My aim is to access my email, of which I have many POP3 accounts, and my PST files from my laptop without having to have my pc guzzling electricty all day.

Ideally I'd like a solution where one day I can access my email online, when I go to work.

Any suggestions?

  1. It's quite easy.

In Outlook create a new account IMAP using the same
connection details as your existing POP3 Account.

Once this is created delete your POP3 Account otherwise
the emails will keep downloading off the server.

Now in outlook folder list you should see the imap folder
normally like mail.servername.com under here you have
    Inbox, Sent Items.

Now all you do is drag the contents of your PST inbox
over into the IMAP Folder Inbox and it will upload to the
server and be accesible via webmail aswell.

I do have a detailed PDF which I made a while ago on
my home pc which I will send you later.

  2. I forgot to mention, email storage is part of your
    webspace allocation.

What I do on my main laptop is have outlook setup with
the IMAP folder then I have an archive PST which is any
email before x date i.e before Jan 2008.

  3. In total my PST files come to 1.6gb

  4. You could store 1.6GB online depending on your
diskspace, my advice would be to archive off old data
and only really store current data online.

  5. I guess thats my main problem, thats including my archive pst which is 850mb. I do need to tidy up my main pst file.

    All my emails since 1999.

Also, could I combine my pop3 accounts into one webmail account?

  6. Yep a good tidy up is highly recommended i tend to
archive using outlook to years i.e before 01/08 >
archive2008.pst and then burn that CD / DVD most likely
I never go back to it anyway.

    Multiple POP3 theres two options

    1) will you ever need to reply using that account email
    address?

If so keep the pop3 accounts but within webmail setup a
forward rule to your main account

In your main account setup a rule to auto move these
emails to a sub folder to make it tidy.

If you have an email you need to reply from just log into
webmail as that account and reply to the email.

    2) If you never need to reply as the email account just
setup email forwards with out creating the pop3 account
    in the control panel.

  7. Yes I would need to reply using the same account, having to login to another account, seems a bit of a chore, just to accomplish that :(

  8. I think by design of most webmail systems the
availability of changing the from field is not possible.

I run many email forwards to my main webmail account,
a lot of the emails I never really need to reply as the
person receiving it, but when I do I just re log into
    webmail as that account.

You can change your reply-to address in webmail but
you would need to change this everytime you want to
    send as someone else.

  9. Before I made my initial post, I had a google and it mentioned a process of using IMAP with gmail to import your pst file.

When there was talk of IMAP etc, I glazed over.

With gmail I'm pretty sure you can send and receive and keep the from address, you have to go from a verification process where they send you an email and you have to confirm it.

But this seems like a simialr approach to what you were suggesting.

Maybe thats the way to go.

  11. Actually my other address is a gmail account too, I guess I should have a play around and see.

Actually, I won't have my rules wizard :(
